Non-Impact Printers and Their Types

Introduction

A printer is a machine that receives text and visual information from a computer and transfers the data to printed paper sheets the same size as an ordinary page. Speed, size, performance, and cost are all differentiators for printers. High-resolution printing in color and on paper requires more expensive printers. There are two types of printers: impact printers and non-impact printers.

During printing, the paper comes into contact with an impact printer. Non-impact printers print without ever making physical contact with the sheet. The typical output device is a printer. For printing output on paper, they are employed. They are used in the printing process for paper. A hard copy is a term used to describe information printed on paper and may take shape in text, symbols, or images.

There are two different kinds of printers:

  1. Impact Printers
  2. Non-Impact Printers 

Non-Impact Printers

Printers that don't impact the paper are known as "non-impact printers." A combination of thermal, inkjet, and electrostatic printing methods are employed.

In comparison to non-impact printers, impact printers produce output that is slower and of lower quality. Up to 24 pages can be printed every minute using them. They make no sound as they print. Compared to impact printers, these printers cost more.

Characteristics of Non-Impact Printers

  • The printing process is quicker than with an impact printer.
  • They don't physically touch; printing requires the assistance of ink or other materials and cannot be done without touching the paper.
  • Printed materials of high quality.
  • When they print, they are more silent than impact printers.
  • A graphic image is also printed in its entirety.
  • Compared to impact printers, they require less maintenance and repairs.
  • Due to their ease of use and reputation for being quick, they are still in use today.
  • It is utilized in small devices like billing machines, ATMs, movie theatre tickets, bus tickets, and ATM receipt printers.
  • Workers, employees, and students widely use them for official work purposes.

Laser Printer

The acronym "laser" stands for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation." The best non-impact printer right now is a laser printer because of its efficiency and high quality. Like a photocopier, it performs the same tasks. Laser printers use toner and LASER technology to put the image from the output on paper. Ink powder, or toner, is one such type. A laser printer and a photocopier also contain it.

A distinct drum can be found within the laser printer. A picture has been formed on the drum beat as an output. This image will later be transferred to paper. A picture is created on the drum by sprinkling magnetic ink powder in the form of tiny dots. The size of these dots may be between 300 and dpi to 1200 dpi.

Text and images can be printed on the laser printer in extremely high resolution. A single page at a time is the maximum capacity of a laser printer. Printers made with lasers are also referred to as page printers. The laser printers can print 4 to 32 pages per minute on microcomputers and mainframe systems, 200 pages per minute.

The six steps involved in operating a laser printer are as follows:

  1. Cleaning
  2. Conditioning
  3. Writing
  4. Developing
  5. Transferring
  6. Fusing

Cleaning

The first step in the cleaning process is to get rid of any outdated or unusable toner from the drum. With the help of a blade akin to a windshield wiper, additional toner to the drum is removed. Excess toner is accumulated in the used toner container, which is either housed throughout the cartridge itself or in a different container that can be emptied or disposed of.

Conditioning

The remaining prints from the printer drum are removed during this stage.

Writing

During the writing process stage, a hidden image is imprinted on the highly photosensitive drum using an electrostatic charge generated by a laser.

Developing

The pigment toner is drawn to the hidden image on the drum by electrostatic attraction throughout the developing process.

Transferring

 During the process of transferring stage, the transfer leaves an electrical charge on the paper. Then, the negative-charged toner is joined to the positive charge.

Fusible

Fusible is the last step. The molded toner fragments melt and fuse with the paper. It takes place when the paper moves under pressure and a roller that is 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Upon completion of the fusing process, the page gets delivered to the output tray to be printed.

Inkjet Printer

The second variety of non-impact printers is the inkjet printer. It produces output by sprinkling liquid ink drops across the paper's surface. An inkjet printer's print head could spray very tiny ink droplets. A print cartridge with liquid ink inside makes up the device. It consists of a small matrix-shaped nozzle pattern. The liquid ink is sprayed onto the paper through a set of nozzles that function similarly to a dot matrix printer to generate the form of an individual or image. These types of printers have a 300 to 720 dpi recovery range.

The cost of inkjet printers is lower than that of laser printers. In addition, they print less clearly and more slowly than laser printers. In contrast to dot-matrix printers, they operate faster and have more effective print quality. One to six pages can be printed each minute on an inkjet printer.

Thermal Printer

Printing with a thermal printer is an additional choice for non-impact printing. It operates only with a specific kind of heat-sensitive waxy paper. By igniting dots on waxy paper, an output image is created. When printing in color, colored waxy sheets are used.

With the help of a heat printer, a printout of excellent quality is produced. Its large print area sets it apart from other non-impact printers.

There are two varieties of thermal printing processes:

Digital Direct Thermal Printing

Direct Thermal Printing:

 Direct Thermal Printing is a method of printing that transfers heat from the printing device immediately to the thermal paper. The blackening of the paper results from the action of chemicals in the sensitive heat layer of the laminate material. It is important to note that contemporary thermal printing paper is much more resistant to outside effects than earlier generations, ensuring its color remains vibrant for several years.

Thermal Transfer Printing

In contrast, thermal transfer printing uses colored or heat-transfer foil to print on paper. The computer's control may activate every one of the hundreds of tiny heating elements inside the print head. The print head's heat melts the foil because it is enclosed between the printing device and the sheet.

Thermal Printing and Inkjet Printing Systems

While thermal presses are required to produce images directly on packaging for a product, inkjet printing systems are frequently employed. The primary benefit is that these types of machines can print on various materials, including metal, paper packaging, synthetic materials, paper, and synthetic surfaces. Pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and postal services use inkjet printing for packaging.

Cartridges of ink with a large number of tiny chambers are used in thermal printers that use inkjet printing methods. An electric impulse heats them. The ink is forced through the nozzle by a small vapor bubble, which is created as a result of the heat. In a split second, the ink shoots back because of the outer tension of the ink drop and the pressure of the vapor bubble.

Another combination of thermal printing and inkjet printing technology is known as the piezoelectric inkjet printing method, also referred to as piezo inkjet printing. While the electrical impulse is stopped, the walls return to their original position. The remaining ink not used for the print is drawn into the cartridge by a vacuum created in the chamber.
