History of Mouse

Douglas Engelbart, a computer scientist at the Stanford Research Institute, created the first mouse in 1964. The wooden box that housed Engelbart's mouse had two wheels on the bottom and two buttons on top. It had a wire connecting it to a computer.

Before Apple Computer released the Macintosh computer in the early 1980s, which came with a mouse as standard input, the mouse was not extensively used. The mouse was necessary for navigating on the Macintosh, the first computer to use a graphical user interface.

Types of Mouse

Mouse come in two primary varieties: wired and wireless. Wireless mouse communicate with the computer using radio waves, whereas wired mouse are connected to it via a cable.

Although they can be more challenging to use with laptops and other portable devices, wired mouse are more dependable than wireless ones. Compared to wired mouse, wireless mouse are more convenient. However, they might cost more and have a shorter battery life.

Anywhere on the actual screen can be where the mouse pointer is placed. (Keep in mind that in a graphical environment, this can encompass areas outside of your application window.)

In graphical settings, the form of the mouse pointer can change. Generally, an arrow is the default shape. The mouse pointer is a square in reverse-video on character-based systems.

There are one to three buttons on the mouse itself. The position of these buttons can be up or down. If a mouse button is pressed down and swiftly released, we say that the button has been clicked. It is also possible to double-click a button, which is to click it twice quickly. (Note that clicking and double-clicking are temporary actions; up and down are states.)

The left, right, and middle buttons are the names of the buttons. A one-button mouse only has a left button; a two-button mouse only has left and right buttons. Left-handed users usually interchange the left and right buttons, but this is handled outside the program; your program always refers to the primary mouse button as the left button, regardless of which button is being utilized.

Some mouse have a wheel in addition to buttons. Similar to a scroll bar, the mouse wheel can be used to scroll a window. Within the Windows environment, the user can set the mouse wheel action to correspond with a specific number of mouse button clicks on the scroll bar for each click (or notch) of the mouse wheel in the Mouse Properties applet of the Control Panel.

The text cursor in the program is not linked to the mouse pointer. In most cases, an application allows the user to move the text cursor around the screen by dragging the mouse pointer to the desired spot and using the left button to activate it.

Operations of Mouse

In a graphical user interface (GUI), a mouse is usually used to control the mobility of a pointer in two dimensions. The mouse converts hand gestures like left and right, forward and backward, into corresponding electrical signals that are used to move the cursor.

The pointer emulates hand movements by referencing the relative movements of the mouse on the surface in relation to its position on the screen, which indicates the location of the user's activities. In graphical user interfaces, the "icons" and other small graphics can be used to choose files, programs, or actions from a list of names by clicking or pointing (which stops movement when the cursor is inside an area). An image of a paper notebook, for instance, may be used to symbolize a text file. By clicking on this icon, a text editing program could open the file in a window.

Certain actions taken with the mouse have different effects on the GUI:

Point: Halt the pointer's movement when it is inside the bounds of the object the user wishes to interact with. The names "pointer" and "pointing device" come from this act of pointing. Pointing is called "hovering" in the jargon of web design. This usage expanded to include Android and web programming, and it is currently present in a wide range of settings.
Pressing and releasing a button produces a click:
- (left) One-click: pressing the primary button.
- (left) Double-clicking: Pressing the button twice quickly is recognized as a distinct gesture, unlike making two individual clicks.
- (left) Triple-clicking: Pressing the button three times quickly is recognized as a distinct gesture from three individual single clicks. In conventional navigation, triple clicks are much less typical.
- Right-clicking: Select the back button. This often opens a context menu in newer apps.
- Middle-click: Select the third-level menu item. This is also the scroll wheel in most cases.
- Pressing the fourth shortcut.
- Pressing the fifth shortcut key.
- For mouse and other similar devices, the USB standard specifies up to 65535 unique buttons, yet in reality, buttons with more than three are rarely used.
Drag: This technique involves holding down a button while moving the mouse and then releasing the button. It is commonly used to drag and drop files or other things, move them around, or copy them; it can also be used to select text and draw in graphics program.
Chord clicking or chording on the mouse button:
- Use many buttons at once to click.
- Clicking on the keyboard while typing a letter at the same time.
- Simultaneously clicking and rolling the mouse wheel.
Clicking when a modifier key is depressed.
Extending the mouse pointer's reach: After a mouse's practical range of motion is reached, the mouse is raised, moved to the other edge of the workspace while held above it, and then lowered back onto the workspace. Because acceleration software recognizes rapid movement and advances the cursor noticeably faster in relation to slow mouse motion, this is frequently not required.
Multi-touch: this technique is comparable to a laptop's multi-touch touchpad that allows for the tapping of many fingers for input; the most well-known example of this is the Apple Magic Mouse.
