List of Colleges in Pune

As a result of the Rockefeller Foundation's worldwide campaign to study arthropod-borne viruses, the National Institute of Virology, one of the top institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), was founded in 1952 in Pune, Maharashtra State, as the Virus Research Centre (VRC). Arboviruses were also seen to be an appropriate category for intense training and research in virology in our country because studies on arboviruses and their arthropod vectors integrate most of the basic principles and techniques of general entomology, virology, and zoology.

Since the RF stopped funding the Institute in 1967, the ICMR has provided all of the Institute's funding.

By organizing additional research areas, such as Cell repository, Electron microscopy, Rickettsioses, Hepatitis, Influenza, and associated viruses, Virus registry, Clinical virology, Biochemistry, and Biostatistics, the centre's research activities were made more significant and self-sufficient. A Scientific Advisory Committee SAC, made up of renowned scientists, oversees the Institute's research initiatives.

Through the continued efforts of numerous devoted employees, the Institute had deep scientific roots by the 1970s. The VRC was given national importance status and the new name National Institute of Virology NIV in 1978 on the advice of the SAC. Later, research was also started on AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), Rotavirus gastroenteritis, acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis, rabies, Herpes simplex, chicken pox, measles, and poliomyelitis.

At Pashan, 11 km from the primary laboratory in Pune, a Microbial Containment Complex MCC with P-3 biosafety requirements is being developed to handle highly pathogenic microorganisms. This lab will offer national containment capabilities for securely taking hazardous organisms.

The Institute began operating as the WHO's regional centre for South-East Asia for arbovirus investigations in 1969 after being named one of the World Health Organization's collaborating laboratories in 1967. It has been operating as a WHO-collaborating centre for arbovirus reference and study since 1974.

The National Center for Hepatitis and Influenza is another name for NIV.
