As a result of the Rockefeller Foundation's worldwide campaign to study arthropod-borne viruses, the National Institute of Virology, one of the top institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), was founded in 1952 in Pune, Maharashtra State, as the Virus Research Centre (VRC).
