Full Form of ODI in Cricket

Cricket is one of the most popular sports in India and as well as many other countries. There are many formats in which cricket matches are conducted. ODI is one of them.

There are 3 formats in which cricket matches are conducted. Test matches, ODIs, Twenty 20 Internationals. Test matches are the traditional ones and were invented first. These matches are governed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) also provides match officials.

ODI Stands for One Day International.

The term "one-day international" (ODI) in cricket refers to a specific format. It refers to a specific type of match in which two teams play limited-overs cricket. The name itself specifies that these matches are played in single day, unlike test matches that lasts for five days. The ICC World Cup ODI is conducted once every four years.

This format was introduced in the 1970s to play quickly in one day unlike test matches of longer duration 4-5 days.

The ICC Cricket World Cup has gained popularity since the introduction of the One Day Internationals. The world's top teams compete for the World Cup in the ODI competition, which takes place once every four years.

Origin of ODI:

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the concept of ODI had begun. At first, they used to play test matches, but the duration of test matches was quite long, often lasting 4-5 days and sometimes even more. So, this became difficult to conduct test matches, and they thought of limiting the duration. They conducted several trails matches to find the shorter format for cricket. On May 5, 1962, at The Oval in London, Surrey and Sussex played a similar kind of One Day Internationals, which set a few overs per each inning and played 2 innings.

The match between England and Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was the debut One-day International Match, held on January 5, 1971. Officials decided to conduct 40-over matches, which led to the creation of one-day Internationals, and later, rules were changed.

First ODI match:

The first ODI match was held between England and Australia on January 5, 1971, at Melbourne Cricket Ground. It was a 40-over-per-inning match, and each over consisted of 8 balls.

In this historic match, the team Australia captain was Bill Lawry, and the England captain was Ray Illingworth. Australia won the toss, and they chose to bat at first. In this match a red ball was used and both the teams wore white uniforms. In this match, England defeated Australia by five wickets, and 4 balls remained in the first ODI match. This match was a huge success, and since then, ODI has become one of the formats of cricket. Later, Twenty20s were introduced.

After the success of ODI, cricket's organizers were asked to make any further changes in the format's rules. In 1972, one-day Internationals were officially sanctioned by the International Cricket Conference (ICC), which is now known as the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Later, ICC changed the overs from 40 to 50.
